    Hey there!

I have been playing some roguelikes as of late, including the original Rogue. Gotta love the cheap deaths, the cursed items, having a high level character killed by a lvl 1 monster.

Anyway, during my research, I have found Hyper Rogue. Hyper Rogue is a modern Roguelike whose game world follows hiperbolic geometry instead of euclidian geometry. It is an open world divided in "lands" that are procedurally generated. The more treasure you get from a land, the more dangerous the land becomes, so the player must always weight if it is worth it to pick another ruby in the Jungle and risk making the Jungle too hard to play, instead of moving somewhere else. Treasure allows to unlock orbs, which grant special powers.

The game is FOSS and available for multiple platforms, including Linux (and I suspect it could be made to work on BSD). It is also available on Steam.

Back in the late 1980's/early '90's I got to where I was really good at
that game. Within the past couple of years, I installed a copy and, for
the life of me, never could get very far with it. I actually got really frustrated with it.

Guess I need to take a weekend or two to get my chops back, lol.

I think you were not really supposed to beat Rogue. It was more of an arcade experience.

There is a guy at rlgallery.org that allows to play many of the early Rogue and roguelike variants online, if you want to relive your nostalgic years again.

It turns out Rogue V4 and V5 had a bad bug which granted monsters a sneal attack bonus against the adventurer every single time. If you used to play an early variant and then moved to a more modern one, the difficulty spike must have been noticeable.

I have most of them in the RPG section of AmigaCity.xyz as well...

That is cool! I would not consider Rogue a real RPG, but who cares :-P

That's ok. I'm Old Skool and as far as I'm concerned now computer game can EVER be a true RPG, because your actions are restricted to what the programmers want you to be able to do. A TRUE RPG is totally free-form and you can haggle with the Game master on whether or not your ideas will work.

Yes, but they can at least try :-)

Lots of computer games are hack and slash games with RPG-like combat mechanics, and they are marketed as Roleplaying Videogames. Now, compare Diablo I with Baldur's Gate II, in which your dialogues change the outcome of the quests, there is character development (you can maintain a romantic relationship with members of your party, even!) and a lot of world building. It is obviously limited by the videogame format, but at least it sort of tried.

Then there is X-men legends, which has RPG writen everywhere in the manual and marketing material. It is a kill-kill-kill game and dialogues don't matter at all. And it is sloppy at being a hack-kill-hack game at that.
