    I have/had all kinds of security cameras over the years and the most reliable are the IP/Ethernet cameras with power-over-Ethernet (PoE) being

    nice convenience as well. I still use some WiFi cameras, but they
    sometimes
    lose connectively, sometimes need to be reset. I also use several USB-connected webcams as security cameras and even an old firewire camcorder. They all work but have their distance limitions.

    What i've started using recently are old webcam (usb) with raspery pi and this open source project : https://www.kerberos.io/

    you control where you store the footage etc. So it's more secure than a ring doorbell for example.

    I use a security program called Blue Iris which is very feature-rich (but Windows only and while cheap, not totally free) and I use Pogoplugs (similiar to an rPi in capability) as USB->LAN bridges for some of my web/security cams running mjpgstreamer - works good, but no audio.
