• Dynamic DNS Service?

    From J. Adam Gosselin@VERT to All on Friday, January 25, 2019 14:34:00
Would anyone one recommend a dynamic DNS service that has a simple and straight-foward client, script, or service that will update the DNS entry
    at regular intervals?

In the past, I've used DynDNS but they are owned by Oracle now and they are full pay. I looked in No-IP and it looks like I have to get their updater service for CentOS 7, but I am not sure if it would be easy to set up or
not. I did consider going with freedns.afraid.org, and it looks like they
have a URI that is available to update the DNS entry automatically. The
issue that I have with freedns.afraid.org is that I'm not comfortable with some of their choice of domain names.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

you can always just use the .synchro.net service.
how often does your ip change? you can just get a domain name and
use an updater script. i think namecheap and cloudflare have that ability.

I may consider going through Synchronet if I ever get a BBS up. For the
time being, I just would like to have a DNS entry for easy access to my VM server at home (the same "server" that I plan on running the BBS on, just a repurposed desktop that was just going to be in storage).

As far as how often my IP adress changes, it doesn't seem like it's very frequent. The current IP address that I have now is over a month old (as far as I can tell). That seems pretty typical for the ISP that I get my Internet connection from.

I've used No-IP for quite a while and the service has been great.
Their updater service is easy to set up and use, I have it set up
on a Rasp Pi and it works perfectly. You can have up to three
domains free with them, and I'd recommend them highly.

    NOIP https://www.noip.com/
thats what I use, they have a small program that you run on your server.

... The trouble with facts is that there are so many of them.

I use freemyip.com to keep my home IP updated. I run my BBS on a seperate server which has a static IP so I don't have to worry about it. What I like about freemyip.com is you don't have to run an updater app, you can just use task scheduler or cron to fetch a page and it updates, or what I have done is just set my homepage in firefox to update it and then go to my normal homepage.

Tbat is what freedns.afraid.org offers as well: a URI that you can set up
a cron tab entry with curl or wget.

You can always use the Synchronet Dynamic DNS Service. the synch service but I use but I also use no-ip.com. no ip is really easy to setup and the basics are free. there are extras services but they are for extra charges

    but its a great service.

I second no-ip.com. Very easy to use, and the pricing is in line with other providers out there.

Shell out $12 a year or so for your own domain name through
domains.google.com and then set it up receive DDNS updates.

    https://support.google.com/domains/answer/6147083?hl=en

That way you have complete control over your domain.
