i wonder if they even get money from people doing this shit. i like using aliases so i see what sites get compromised.
I can't count anymore how many emails of this kind i have gotten =) The best defence is using your brain.
One thing about Gmail is that it has a sort of smart email filter that can detect spam. Most of the time, I don't even see emails like this anymore, as they go directly to spam. But sometimes I do need to check my spam in case it mistakenly flagged a real email.

Thats what you get for giving all your data to google ;)

I'm not sure what you mean..? You make spam filtering sound like a negative. The auto spam filter means I don't have to spend my own time looking at spam emails and deleting them, and I don't know how that would be a negative..

Just saying, google can develop very effective tools (spam filters) cause it has full access to millions of emails. i like efective spam filters! just pointing out that google can access a huge dataset to train their filters and that makes it potentially very effective.
Its all good and no issue if you don't mind sharing all your data =) I do
It is the same with google maps. when you use it in your car as a route planner, you act as a live google sensor. Its a give and take. You just have to be aware of it, that you pay with your data at free and paid google services.
not sure if they use one address to receive the ransom only. If so,
you can check the address if others have paid.

decided to impose their AI experiments on their user base. Fuck Google. Af 20+ years of gmail, I guess I need to start using my Proton address...

True, though I've hoped it's only trained on the emails that people have marked as spam, rather than using all your data. :)

Yes, they do get a profit. If you monitor their wallet address
you can often see money getting dumped into it.
Scammers suck and deserve to die, but people who falls for this also
suck and deserve to die. Nothing to see here.
well the one i checked on is pretty broke. what i hate is how these sites are compromised and get my information. most of the time they dont even inform us.
I also like this... but had to turn it off the other day since GMail has decided to impose their AI experiments on their user base. Fuck Google. After 20+ years of gmail, I guess I need to start using my Proton address...

I am an email service administrator and end users rarely get these either on my systems. It is not like Google has a monopoly on smap filtering. I still get to read a lot of spam that is sent to quarantine and it is a source for giggles.

if you would never give away your actual email address but a single
use forwarder always, you could just delete your forwarder email
and use a different one in case it got compromised. Right?

Can you be more specific? I've used Gmail for at least 20 years
and have been nothing but satisfied with it's performance.
I've experienced nothing that would imply Google's doing anything
nefarious.
