Question? How is it possible the name "Synchronet" can be used by others? There's no trademark or copy right infringments? Everyone has seen the NY Buffalo IT company called Synchronet right? synchronet.net I thought there were laws or something? Domain rights?? I'm no attorney but it pisses me off whenever I search Synchronet this company shows up. Anyone know anything about this stuff?

This sort of thing happens from time to time. One or both parties using the name would have to take issue with the other, and enact some
sort of legal challenge. I can't imagine that DM is going to do that, and I doubt if the other guys are worried that they're losing
business because people are starting up a BBS instead of using their products/services.
How big of a problem the sharing of a name is depends on how confusing it is to the public (consumers). Here's an article I just skimmed
on
the topic:
https://www.upcounsel.com/likelihood-of-confusion-factors
"Relatedness of the Products" is probably paramount here. However, there have been big disputes between companies with (at the time)
very
unrelated businesses:

Closer to your question (an open source project vs. some company), here's a story about how such a dispute spiralled into big problems a
few
years ago:

Another story about name confusion:

Anyway, I don't think some company is going to change their name if we ask them politely, and apart from some cluttering of search
results
it doesn't seem like much of a problem.

what about apple records vs. apple computers? a real court case based on copyright infringement.

Thanks for the links. I think I'll just send them an email and give them my opinion without all the legal mumbo jumbo. At the very least it's
disrespecful to use a pre-exisiting name. Years ago I tried to register a
business name for tax purposes and because it was similar to an existing business I was asked not to use it. I have no idea what the "rules" are on the world wide web. Thanks for your reply.

I don't think Apple (computer company) infringed on any copyrights. They just have a similar name, and now that Apple (computer company)
also hosts music, it could be confusing to consumers, which I think is the real issue.

Also, before Apple made their iPhone, I heard Cisco had a network-enabled phone product they called the iPhone.. I think Apple negotiated a deal with them to use the name iPhone for their (Apple's) phone.
Cisco definitely had an operating system called IOS before Apple's iOS. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of?

Really, iOS on an iPad? ;)
I think iOS is the only OS you can use on an iPad.. though I suppose it may be possible to install Linux or something on a jailbroken
iPad.

(tm) is for a trademark, which I'm pretty sure is different than a copyright (if perhaps only slightly).

The CISCO phone I have is used with a party line setup for amateur
radio operators called "HamShack Hotline". The service is free, but you have to purchase, and "provision" the phone.
My condolences on losing your mother.

Just a quick note on HamShack Hotline, I have only used once or twice
to talk to a "local" ham on his mobile phone while he traveled home to Bakersfield. I rarely talk on the phone, except for work and family. I have a CISCO IP PHONE 303 provisioned with three different services. HamShack Hotline is line 1, The second "line" is onethat the boss pays
for as part of the cloud-based phone service he requested several years ago (cut costs from over $500 monthly to about $700 yearly). The third
is another one through SIP.US.
