• Message Purging with Synchronet

    Hi -

Can someone point me to the proper configuration to maintain my message bases in Synchronet?
I see there are purge options by age in the message area setting but i am not sure if some event is
needed to insure that that happens. Can anyone explain how best to manage this and explain how
    it works for Synchronet?

    Thank you ...

one thing i would advise against is putting all your data files in one dir for your msg subs.

you can have them in separate directories but then you'd have to change your script for running maint on the msg bases.

I think that's a good thing to do, but if you use an internal code prefix for your message groups then I don't think that would be a problem. The internal code prefix for the message group would apply to all the sub-boards in that group, so if you have a unique prefix for the group, then the message sub-boards should each have a unique internal code and there shouldn't be conflicts.

Still, I've been keeping my sub-board files in their own separate directories per message group.

I've done that ever since I helped a fellow sysop when his system crashed.
He had hundreds of areas in an old Searchlight BBS - I think it kept 4 files per message area. His poor old DOS system couldn't handle one directory with thousands of fragmented files in it.

My Synchronet data directory is a share thats mounted by the VM. I don't have to worry about all the file and messages bases if the VM gets hosed and I have to restore from a backup.

Ah. I run my BBS in a VM, but I don't keep any of its files on a share folder. I periodically back up my BBS in case anything goes wrong.

it's still better to keep things neat and in their own directory.
