What kind of question is this? Synchronet has been the way it is for a long time; why would you expect it to become more like a different BBS package? I doubt Digital Man is going to change his mind on how Synchronet is implemented and make it work like a different BBS package. If you like Wildcat Professional, then use that instead..

Yes, feature-parity with Wildcat Professional is on the Synchronet Version 4 to-do list.

It has been a long time since I looked at Wildcat, but I imagine Synchronet offers pretty much the same general features that Wildcat offers. Also, if you want to give users a more Wildcat-like experience, Synchronet does have a Wildcat emulation shell. Though, I tend to be in favor of customizing your BBS to have a unique look & feel so that it doesn't really look like a stock BBS of any type. People might still realize what BBS software you're running, but overall I like the look & feel of my BBS to be fairly unique.

Well as I understand it your Synchronet Software works with Windows 10
and was last updated on 1/1/19.

Has Wildcat been updated any over these years?

If not, that is a big 'plus' for using/getting Synchronet! :)

Synchronet pretty much exceeds Wildcat in every meaningful way. If you
want a pretty GUI custom client and admin interfaces, then you'd
probably need to fork out mid-six figures to fund development, because
anyone capable of doing such development is unlikely to do so without it
being a paying job. Just my $.02 Feature wise, it's leaps and bounds

What do you think makes Wildcat look 'incredible'? I haven't used any Wildcat BBSes lately, so I'm probably out of touch, but I somehow doubt it's leaps and bounds ahead of Synchronet, or much different than it used to be. I never hear any BBS sysops raving about it. It seems Synchronet and Mystic are two of the most popular BBS packages being used right now.

Having used Wildcat software 1995, and still occasionally check out a demo for updates just for shit and giggles, I can, IMHO, say Wildcat BBS sucks s%*t especially if you try to run in a VM. Synchronet is Leaps
and Bounds over WC on every level .. and you can customize SBBS's web ui anyway you want ... you can even write your own web ui if you do not want to customize either the stock runemaster or echickens webv*

Good god, pretty much every bbs software worked in in the past 20 years is leaps and bounds better than Wildcat.

though, I rarely condescend, I must make a personal observation ... you seem to be the type of person that just wants to stir the pot and raise controversy about anything other than SBBS by starting with blah balh blah vs SBBS ...

    Nail on the head.

What do you think makes Wildcat look 'incredible'? I haven't used any

    Taken from the site:

"Wildcat! is the most successful commercial computer Bulletin Board System (BBS) software package in history - over 80,000 were sold connecting more than 30 million consumers."

That sounds like marketing hype.. They can say what they want to make their software sound great. It sounds like they're counting total sales throughout Wildcat's history, which probably includes their 1980s and 1990s sales up until now. It sounds like they did sell a lot, but other packages did too. I remember other BBS packages being fairly popular too. RemoteAccess, Wildcat, and MajorBBS all seemed fairly popular in my area in the 90s, but others were also plenty popular, such as Spitfire, Maximus, Searchlight, WWIV, and others.

I think Synchroent is a great package though. I've stuck with Synchronet since 2007 and have been fairly happy with it. I am curious to see what Mystic or others offer, but I don't really feel a pressing need to switch to another BBS package.

I never hear any BBS sysops raving about it. It seems Synchronet and Mystic are two of the most popular BBS packages being used right now.

I would hype my product up on my website also to boost sales, doesn't make it the better BBS package though.

... you play an electric guitar without an amp?

Some people actually do like to play an electric guitar unplugged sometimes. I've heard of people playing them that way to get an idea of how they sound that way, since the wood & things that the body is made of can affect how the strings vibrate, which in turn affects the sound of the guitar even when plugged in.

Also, hollow-body electric guitars tend to sound better unplugged than solid-body electric guitars, due to how the sound resonates inside the guitar.

Wildcat has wcBasic which cost from $99 to $400 you can create addons for Synchronet and Mystic for free. What else I hate is I need to get Platinum Xpress and NetSerial to get FTN working and only to hubs that runs NetSerial. At least both Synchronet and Mystic both as a mailer and tosser built in and can connect to hubs more FTN hubs. The only good thing Wildcat has is QWK network support.

Funny that swearing is a no-no, yet posting garbage, throwing petty fits when someone disagrees with you, flouting all known rules of logic, then seeking excuse by age and infirmity are totally acceptable behaviours in your book.

he got me angry so i flung it right back at him.

"He" is the same person you were replying to here. Discourteous of you to forget that.

I get why you keep bringing up these studio recording tidbits. You want to show that you're not completely stupid, there are things that you know that maybe we don't. That's great, but nobody was questioning your ability to calibrate recording equipment or measure gain.

The thing is - and I've taken the time to look back on this thread just so as not to talk out of my bum-bum - he didn't say that you were stupid, didn't say that you don't know anything about anything, didn't actually insult your intelligence in any way. All he said was that you seem to want to stir the pot.

Your response was a total non sequitur. The only thing you flung back at him was an admission that you can't defend or expand upon your original comment. Be better.

So when was the last update for Wildcat? Assuming there are any? Vs Synchronet update that was last done 1/1/19?

Aside from the official release of Synchronet, there are daily builds of Synchronet that incorporate Digital Man's changes (he actively commits changes fairly often). The daily builds are considered 'beta' and are not thoroughly tested, but most of the time they seem to be fairly stable.

I'm currently running a Synchronet build from January 23rd; I guess I haven't updated my binaries since then.

and tosser built in and can connect to hubs more FTN hubs. The only
good thing Wildcat has is QWK network support.

And I'm sure Synchronet's QWK network support is better. DM has added some nifty QWK networking features, and even better, he's documented them, so other BBS developers can incorporate them into their products.

Swearing is not human or an excuse, DM. It's a lack of respect and insolent towards others that are here for civilized conversation. You can still talk without using profane words in a message. I do it all the time myself.

There are people who see it that way, and there are others who don't really feel offended by a few swear words.

I wouldn't tell anyone to fuck off if they were here for civilized conversation. I usually reserve it for people who are a consistent drag, downer, irritant, and who show no sign of listening/learning/improving. Or friends who can tell when I'm joking.

    You can still talk
without using profane words in a message. I do it all the time myself.

I do it most of the time. I'd bet 80% or more of my messages over the past few years are profanity free. The other <= 20% of the time ... I forget there are people out there who are so sensitive to these words they get bent out of shape about it.

I'd say I'm sorry, but to be fair I probably meant to offend you.

Harden up, butterfly. Maybe you shouldn't try and
    tone-police others.

Take it from the rest of us, he is a lost cause.

    Here's a related story.

After I got off of active duty the first time, I
spent a few years drilling with a USMC reserve unit
out of Brooklyn. At the time, there was an older
Gunny (that is, Gunnery Sergeant - E7 in the Marine
Corps) who we called the "haircut gunny" because he
was really big on proper haircuts. Now, Marines are
pretty particular about haircuts and appearance in
general (though we used to joke in the barracks that
the difference between a good haircut and a bad
haircut was one week...), but this guy took it to
    11. Bear in mind we're all New Yorkers, so kinda
assholes to begin with, but this guy would get all
up in our shit saying stuff like, "If you come in
here with a messed up haircut, I'm gonna shave your
    fuckin' head!"

So the regs say you have to have a haircut where
your hair is no longer than 3 inches long, and the
sides and back of your head have to be neatly
shaved, faded into the longer hair on top. You're
not allowed to have "eccentric" haircuts, though
what that means is a bit up to discretion. Kind of
like porn, though, you know it when you see it.
So you can shave your head bald (the guys who were
actually balding usually did that), but can't have
a tonsure like a Catholic monk.

Now, at the time, we had this Italian guy from out
on the island (that is, Long Island) in our platoon.
This guy was a real joker; he was always doing
stuff to deliberately piss off the staff NCOs. I
was still enlisted at the time, probably a Lance
Corporal or maybe a Corporal; I can't remember. But
anyway, one day this dude comes in with this weird
haircut. He doesn't have the regulation fade in the
back, but rather, has a perfect line going from hair
that's maybe an eighth of an inch down to skin going
right around the back of his head. I mean, you coulda
cut a steak on this thing. I take one look at this
dude and say, "aww shit, ${name} is gettin' his head
    shaved today."

Sure enough, in walks haircut Gunny, who then
proceeds to lose his shit in the most fantastic way
I've ever experienced. I mean, red face, eyes
bulging, frothy spittle flying from mouth type pissed.
Enraged, he screams, "GET ME MY FUCKING CLIPPERS!!"
and proceeds to shave our poor friend's head right
then and there, in the middle of the platoon training
    area.

"Poor guy..." I think to myself.

Later that morning we're in formation for some stupid
thing or another. I'm in first rank along with a
buddy of mine, another Italian guy, but this one's
from Jersey. Our freshly shorn friend is right behind
us. Jersey turns to Island and says, "so...the haircut.
What the hell?" Island looks at Jersey, makes a slow
circular motion with his index finger and simply says,
"Sometimes you've just got to stir the pot a little bit."

I just meant that your take on "swearing" is bullshit.

I agree, but it's clear that even sparse casual swearing offends some people to an extent that is mind-bogglingly foreign to me. I don't mind offending The Millionaire, but I don't want to be a bother to anyone else - within reason.

Ah ... but what would be reasonable? I dropped three fucks on one line of text, so maybe that was too many fucks for one message. Surely there's a non-zero yet socially acceptable number of fucks-per-message(-per-year?), be it as low as 0.1 fucks-per-message (you can say "fuck" once every ten messages without reasonably offending anyone). This implies a form of "fuck-banking", where perhaps I could post a hundred fuck-free messages and earn myself ten fuck-credits to be spent at my discretion, whether it be ten fucks in one message or one fuck per message in ten successive messages. I'll have to think about that.

I ... did try to make that point a while back, albeit in a way that probably didn't register with you.

Don't offend, don't be too easily offended. That's how getting along works: not by everyone rising to the comfort level of the most squeamish, but by all parties trying to meet in the middle.

Don't swear too much, and don't shit your pants at the sight of a few "bad words" here and there. Okay? Why should everyone accommodate you if you're unwilling to accommodate them?

Perhaps someone should write a script that can be run on a timer to periodically scan the messagebases on a Synchronet BBS to gather data on the "fuck count" of the messages. When the fuck count reaches a sysop-configurable threshold, it could take some kind of action, like sending a warning email to the particular user who exceeded the fuck count threshold (if it was a single user).

People can talk without swearing. I do it, DM does it, NF does
    it.

Certainly true. I do it too, nearly all the time.

Some people find it to be offensive and insulting especially
when it's directed at someone who's a little more sensitive.

It is not always the problem of others to change/adjust to suit
the "sensitive" person. That's a common misconception today,
especially among the younger generations. The "masses" don't have
to change to suit the "one". Don't be overly sensitive.

To give this some BBS/echomail context, in the FidoNet network it
is official policy that one should not be "excessively annoying",
    nor "too easily annoyed".

Yes but if everyone just got along with everyone here, there
would be no offending to worry about.

Not completely sure that's true, but... As for everyone getting
along with everyone, do you do your part in helping that happen?
As I've seen it, your messaging style is NOT in line with accepted

So, if you truly want to get along with everyone, please do your

along with everyone, do you do your part in helping that happen?
As I've seen it, your messaging style is NOT in line with accepted
norms, and therefore could be (and is) seen as offensive to
others. You've been asked many times, and given
suggestions/pointers on how to improve, but seem to just ignore
those and continue on as you always have.

So, if you truly want to get along with everyone, please do your
share of trying. The burden is not solely on everyone else to
please you. You share the burden of acting properly.

Since when did you become the new zone co-ordinator of Dove-Net?

I didn't. Also, there is no such thing as a ZC in DoveNet.
That's a Fido/other Net term. Do some research.

Did you threaten or blackmail DM for the job? Seems like it to
    me.

It seems that way to you because you're an idiot.

I was simply TRYING to explain to you why you can't seem to "get
along" with most others in here (and elsewhere). I was hopeful
that you might eventually get it, but you clearly will not.

Do us all a favor, and go away.

Swearing is not human or an excuse, DM. It's a lack of respect and insolent TM>towards others that are here for civilized conversation. You can still talk TM>without using profane words in a message. I do it all the time myself.

I heard one person describe it as "profanity is the attempt of a
feeble mind to express itself forcibly". Both my late Mom and my late
wife had a strong enough command of the English language...that if they
had to do it, they could "tell someone off", but NOT use a single word
of profanity in the conversation. I've known women who've had such
filthy mouths, that they'd make a sailor blush. Nowadays, it seems "the
world has forgotten how to blush".

It goes back to the saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Plus, "if you wouldn't say it to your wife, daughter,
mother, or the preacher, you don't say it"...yet, many have no qualms
    about that.

For that matter, it was over 80 years ago when Clark Gable got into a
severe fight with the Motion Picture Association Of America, who would
NOT let him use the only dirty word in "Gone With The Wind"...from the
book of the same name. It was near the end of the movie (well over 2
hours long), where when Vivian Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara) asks Rhett Butler
(Clark Gable) "what will I do with my life??"...and he replies "Frankly,
    my dear, I don't give a d@mn".

That word is so tame nowadays, because most of the rap songs I hear
have the "F Word" as every other word. One ventriloquist noted "Want to
know what I think of Rap?? Put a C in front of it!!". To me, Rap is for
folks who never learned how to sing...and from the content of most of
it, it seems the only thing they know how to do is curse.

Now, in the King James Version of the Bible, there are 2 passages in
the Old Testament, showing how banal the people were. They basically
were urinating and defecating wherever they felt like it (sounds like
San Francisco today). The passage basically noted that "The Lord would
destroy all of them -- even them that pisseth against a wall". The
language of the King James Version is of William Shakespeare's Day
(Elizabethan English). Their behavior was so vile (as in the days of
Noah before the Flood)...so, God had to destroy them.

Common courtesy and politeness has gone the way of the dinosaur and
    the dodo.

I heard one person describe it as "profanity is the attempt of a
feeble mind to express itself forcibly". Both my late Mom and my late

It may be a saying, but that doesn't make it true. I have the pleasure of knowing many very intelligent people, almost none of whom are above cursing when (in their estimation) the situation warrants it. Clever expression, but it doesn't match up with my experience.

wife had a strong enough command of the English language...that if they

Like them or not, these words are part of that language and are available for use. As with so many things, there's a time, a place, and an acceptable amount.

It goes back to the saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Plus, "if you wouldn't say it to your wife, daughter,

It's a good rule, but it doesn't survive contact with the real world and remain 100% intact. There are situations where not-so-nice things are said, and sometimes need to be said.

know what I think of Rap?? Put a C in front of it!!". To me, Rap is for folks who never learned how to sing...and from the content of most of
it, it seems the only thing they know how to do is curse.

I rarely listen to it - just not my thing - but this sounds like a huge misunderstanding of the genre. Kind of like saying that death metal fails to be music because the lead singer insists on growling instead of crooning like Bing Crosby or somesuch.

It's not for folks who never learned to sing; it's not for folks who only want to hear a certain type of singing. There are plenty of talented artists writing interesting verse in that genre.

Now, in the King James Version of the Bible, there are 2 passages in
the Old Testament, showing how banal the people were. They basically
were urinating and defecating wherever they felt like it (sounds like
San Francisco today). The passage basically noted that "The Lord would destroy all of them -- even them that pisseth against a wall". The language of the King James Version is of William Shakespeare's Day (Elizabethan English). Their behavior was so vile (as in the days of
Noah before the Flood)...so, God had to destroy them.

I'm missing your point here. God didn't like public urination?

Remember that for some (many) people, just because the Bible says something does not make it an unassailable truth. To me, they're just words in a book which I may occasionally agree with. It doesn't matter to me whether "God" frowns upon something; I have my own morals.

(Don't get me wrong - I'd like to see public defecation and urination kept to a minimum.)

Common courtesy and politeness has gone the way of the dinosaur and
    the dodo.

Nah. Common courtesy and politeness may have changed and loosened up, but they still exist. I'm Canadian-level polite most of the time, but I also enjoy the irreverent and coarser things in life. It's all part of the fun.

You could make it look like a stick. Then, when the stick was complete and at the top, the user would be called a "fuck-stick". Then you could have others that didn't use them, and you couldn't give them away, so they couldn't give a fuck.

"Fuck" is the best, and most versatile word in the english language. It is my most favorite word, and I use it quite liberally in daily conversation, especially at work.

I'm an "old", so one of my favorite comedic monologues is from George Carln, where you replace "kill" (which should be obscene) with fuck (which should be great).

There are people who see it that way, and there are others who don't really N>feel offended by a few swear words.

Once in a blue moon, or with a bit of suggestiveness, I don't mind.

But, when it's like with most rap music, where every other word is
an expletive, that's too much. To me, they don't have enough of a
    command of the English language.

I would much rather go to a show rated "G" than one rated "R", because

Do you realize that it is entirely possible to offend someone
    without ever once using profanity?

Life is NOT "Fair" or "Burger King".

Fair is a fall carnival, a weather term, or a call in baseball. And,

Next thing you know, people will be offended at others belching,
