I feel like this place is becoming one big soap opera these days. What happened to old fashioned we used to have like it once was before? Where did all the good times go?
Ok. Real talk? All the joking and other such things aside?
Even forswearing all the profanity?
Here's the reality. The things that people are writing
_about what you write_ are true. Note that that is not
a statement about you, as a person; I'm sure you're a
swell guy face to face as most people are. But the way
you present yourself is, at best, off-putting.
For example, you claim to do "research" but then you post
non-sensical things. You posted something about Linux
being based on DOS in some other forum, for example, but
those of us who are technically oriented and have been
involved in those communities for a long time know that
that's just factually incorrect: Linux was based on Unix,
Unix predated DOS by a decade.
You posted about the 2038 bug also, but the post was
nearly a non-sequitor. It was something like, "will
2038 be the next big bug for BBSes?" Well, no, it
won't because a) most BBS "things" aren't tied to
seconds since the Unix epoch, and again, those of us
who are technically inclined understand that, b) while
32-bit time_t rolls over in 2038, the width of the
integer is hidden behind a typedef, and most systems
have already widened time_t to 64-bits. If you're
talking about software that's been compiled for a
POSIX-style system in the last 10 or 15 years, it's
just not a problem in the same way that, say, Y2K was.
These are just a couple of examples, but they illustrate
the larger point: precisely what _research_ have you
done? That you would post these things sort of
indicates that you haven't done the barest minimum
of, well, actually research into the things you're
writing about.
Furthermore, when someone points out to you that what
you're saying doesn't make a lot of sense, instead of
showing the slightest capacity for self-reflection,
you double down and complain that you're being picked
on.
Now, the BBS world has never been the nicest place,
and perhaps people shouldn't write to you the way
that they do (myself included), but honestly you're
bringing it on yourself. As I said, it's off-putting,
but over time, as you continue exhibiting the same
behavior, it moves to annoying and at some point
starts to look crazy.
I don't suspect that this post will get a positive
reaction. But I think that everyone deserves
honesty if they ask for it. So to answer your
question, it's not the place that's the problem;
it's the way you specifically present yourself.
If you want the good times to continue to roll,
just comport yourself a little differently.
