Im trying to add some networks to my bbs. Its being remotely hosted and the server uses linux. Ive tried using the put command to upload subs.txt and it says it uploads but when i go to synchronet config from the external programs and try to import it its giving me and open error. Since im not used to doing everything as a remote user and not familar with linux just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

I assume you're referring to the ;PUT sysop command (?). That command asks you for a path and a filename. What path and filename did you enter at that prompt? If you did not enter a path, then the CWD (current working directory) is where the file would be received and that's your sbbs/ctrl dir.

In any case, assuming the file was received successfully, you should be able to locate on your file system using shell commands like 'find / -name subs.txt'. Use the ;SHELL sysop command if you don't know how to ssh into your system's command prompt.

Are you logging into the same account as Synchronet runs under? For example, on my system, Synchronet runs under the user sbbs. So to upload files to Synchronet, I would login to (FTP, FTPS or SFTP) as sbbs.

Secondly, are you sure you're specifying the correct path when you import the file?

Another option for smaller text files is to copy the file to the clipboard, open an editor on the Linux box and paste the clipboard contents ino the terminal session.

I manage my systems remote all the time over SSH.

I figured it out. Now the new areas show up in scfg but not on the bbs. If I wasnt having it remote hosted I would recycle everything from the control panel . Is there a way to recycle from a remote connection?

If you made changes in SCFG, the BBS should automatically recycle after you log-off (and all nodes are idle).

Hmm, I've tried that in the past - logging off and waiting, while everything is idle, but no recycling. I end up having to restart sbbs.

If you are at the main menu in SBBS you can ;SHELL (if it isn't disabled like I have on my setup) then once at the shell prompt type touch /sbbs/ctrl/recycle (or where ever your /sbbs/ctrl directory is located

that generally happens when there's an event or something running or possibly stuck...

I end up having to restart sbbs.

max's system used to have to be restarted all the time because something was hanging and recycling wasn't working... at some point an update was done and the problem has not appeared since but that system is not being used or modified as much as it once was...

Then something is wrong. If you touch the ctrl/recycle semfile, does it recycle then? If not, then check your log output during initialization for something like this:
    "Disabling Terminal Server recycle support"

Possibly. I don't have a lot of events, but the ones I have are fairly frequent (like QWK polls).

I updated a few months ago and the stability and manageability of SBBS improved dramatically. I used to have to use a SIGKILL to forcibly terminate sbbs, even waiting an hour didn't work, but on the version I'm running now, sbbs will shut down within 10-20 seconds of receiving a SIGTERM, which is a better outcome. :)
