[@CHECKMARK@] @QUESTION->@? Yes/No
What's this mean? text.dat file? using a older sbbs build? Oh, maybe I have a mod file I gotta update...
There was an update to the yesnobar.src. I compiled it, but my yes/no bars all look like:

Looks like you're running on an older sbbs build. Did you update your source code and rebuild?

Updated source, but I have no clue how to build sbbs using Windows.

You don't need to build it yourself. Read this: http://wiki.synchro.net/install:dev

Yeah, I'm trying to update to the latest build, but Windows XP keeps crashing when I copy over the latest build (using the downloaded nightly build, I can't get windows to compile sbbs, there's no directions anywhere for idiots who don't use MSVS2019 regularly.
Now slyedit isn't working, and fseditor is displaying 0's everwhere.
Might have to install a Win10 VM and see if that fixes the problem.
Is there instructions for IDIOTS on how to build sbbs3 using Visual Studio 2019?

Yes, that's what I did, and using the nightly build causes the system to crash on startup.
I've been updating my system with the nightly build like
every 4-6 weeks for the last few years and this crash is new, but not much else has changed on my end.
I tried installing a new build (copied nightly build to an empty folder, run sbbsctrl.exe), got the first time setup questions, it "failed to save configuration", but the sbbs control panel started up and the same crash occured. The error seems like some WinXP error, and the control panel keeps running if I don't dismiss the error.
I don't know whats going on, but either my OS has a serious issue (maybe VirtualBox is doing something, I dunno), or maybe the code doesn't like XP anymore.
I can run an older build (dated 7/8/2019), but since I didn't save my data files from back then, everything is hosed.
I'll wait a few more nights, maybe someone will realize something, or I'll see if I can get a Win10 VM running.

I'm not clear: why do you think that if you build the latest code with the same tools and libs that I'm using, that it would behave any differently?
If it's crashing, how are you able to run slyedit or fseditor?

No.

The computer system crashes?
I was using MSVC2013 before this year, so if you wanted to use the older dev tools to possibly fix the issue, you'd need to use MSVC2013, not MSVC2019.

It's definitely possible that something in the new Microsoft tools/libs doesn't like WinXP.

I'm not sure what you mean. You should be able to use new/current data with old builds.

It's only a matter of time before I can't feasibly support WinXP any longer. That time may be now, I'm not sure. Best you upgrade to at *least* Win7.

Did you say you're running on Windows XP? I used to run my Synchronet on Windows XP, and I noticed it would crash sometimes, particularly when reading messages with my message reader. I moved it to Windows 7, and now I don't see those same crashing issues.

Yeah, I know, that didn't read too clear after I posted it, sorry.
So I >don't< think that if I build the latest code with the same tools that it'll behave differently.
What I didn't know was that building the code and just using the nightly build would yeild the same results. I'm not (as if you couldn't tell) too savy at "coding".
Don't know if this makes it less clear or not.. I wanted to get the compiler working, because... "why not, it's fun to watch!"
I love flipping through source and trying to figure out how X thing happens.
Honestly just trying to update, don't care how it happens, but right now it's not working. Don't know if it's Synchronet or my WinXP VM.
Worse case scenario I could post a youtube video of whats happening. Maybe I'm just not explaining it correctly.

sbbsctrl.exe is crashing on Windows XP. Your options, the way I see it, are to:
1. Experiment with the source code and different (e.g. older) build tools
2. Upgrade to a newer version of Windows

Got everything running on Win7 now. I tried Win10 Guest, but man that shit i slow, and my Win7 key was having issues which wasn't a major issue once I di the online unlock, but I settled on Win7 for now, it just runs smoother.
So yeah, problems seem gone, so were all good.
