Is there some kind of event to wire up when a message is deleted? I've been working on synchronizing the message bases to an external db and caching
system for web usage, it would be nice to get an event if a message is
deleted so that that deletion can be sync'd immediately without a full rescan of the message base(s).

No. There are lot of ways in which messages can be deleted, so even if an sbbs event, if there was one, wouldn't catch them all.
